Just wondering how the late fall, early winter as shaping up in folks' different areas: anything you expected to see not shown up? anything surprising hanging out?
In SF Bay Area and in Ukiah, the golden crowned sparrows arrived right on time. In Ukiah, I see a greater presence of Steller's Jays actually coexisting w/ the scrub jays while competing for choice feeding spots. Folks on the Mendo coast report greater numbers of Kites than usual.

Scrubs and Stellers

I have recently been seeing this too. I used to never see them in the same area, anywhere. Now they both come to my feeders, but the scrub jays aggressively chase away the stellers when they meet each other. Four or five stellers can be eating out there and one scrub will chase them all away. The scrubs are smaller than the stellers, too. But my partner calls the scrubs the "velociraptors," says their expression and manner remind him of the velociraptors in Jurassic Park.
Stellers I have never lived in close contact with before. They have this endearing slightly klutzy quality. Sort of a loose-knit way of moving around that makes me laugh. One of my favorite birds to watch now.

Re: unusual birds present or missing?
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 1:20 AMLat year I saw Varied Thrushes almost every day in the Las Trampas Wilderness and in surrounding towns. This year I haven't seen one. -

Re: unusual birds present or missing?
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 8:40 PMToday in my backyard I had three different types of doves. Mourning Doves, White-Winged Doves and one (only one!) Eurasian Collared-Dove. I have to admit I'd never seen the Eurasian Collared-Dove before. I was quite excited and made my 4 year old look at all three different types of doves eating the seed I threw out on the ground.
And, while walking around a pool at Agua Caliente Park today I saw a Phainopepla! They are so fun to watch and won't be here for long.
The park down the street from my house has a nesting Vermillion Flycatcher family. I LOVE watching them fly, sing and catch flies. Way better than TV!
By the way, I live in Tucson, AZ and this is a popular stop for lots of migrating birds. Soon, the saguaros will be blooming and we will see a lot of bat activity.
I love this time of year!!!
